Abstract

Abstract

Brill's 'Companion to Aelred of Rievaulx' explores the life, works, and thought of Aelred, Cistercian abbot of Rievaulx Abbey from 1147 to 1167. As well as introducing the three genres of his works - sermons, spiritual teaching, and history - scholars survey such central topics as Marian devotion, love and friendship, the sacramental nature of community, lay spirituality, and saints' lives. The work also includes the first supplement to the Bibliotheca aelrediana secunda, listing publications by and about Aelred from between 1996 and 2015. Aelred is rapidly becoming one of the best-known and most loved of the 12th-century Cistercians; this book provides welcome new insights into his contributions to the spiritual and political concerns of his place and time.

Abstract

The first critical edition of Aelred of Rievaulx's historical and hagiographical works. Aelred’s historical and hagiographical production, which makes him a rather unique figure in the Cistercian panorama of the first generation, is the subject of increasing attention, hampered thus far by the lack of a reliable critical edition of these works. Here for the first time these texts are edited from a collation of the earlier and best manuscripts, accompanied by a biblical and a critical apparatus, each with a concise introduction devoted to the illustration of the manuscript tradition and to the historical and rhetorical background of these texts.

Abstract

In addition to being a prolific spiritual writer and the abbot of the premier Cistercian monastery in northern England, Aelred of Rievaulx somehow found the time and the stamina to travel extensively throughout the Anglo-Norman realm, acting as a mediator, a problem solver, and an adviser to kings. His career spanned the troubled years of the civil war between King Stephen and the Empress Matilda and reached its zenith during the early years of the reign of Henry II. This work focuses on Aelred's public career as revealed in his own historical writing as well as in chronicle references and other documents. This aspect of his life has been previously neglected because his personal letters have been lost and his biographer, Walter Daniel, concentrated on his life within the monastery.

Abstract

The most popular biography of St. Edward the Confessor. Aelred of Rievaulx’s Vita sancti Ædwardi Regis et Confessoris was written on request of Laurence, abbot of Westminster, soon after the canonization of King Edward in 1161, and was presented to King Henry II on the occasion of the translation of the body of the saint on the 13th of October 1163. Preceded by a biography written by an anonymous author for Edward’s wife, Queen Edith, and by the clearly hagiographical biography written by the prior of Westminster, Osbert of Clare, in 1138, Aelred’s Vita enriched the hagiographical dossier of the saint with new miraculous episodes and was also endowed with strong political messages. It soon became the official biography of the saint and its fortune is witnessed not only by the number of manuscripts that contain the text, but also by the fact that all the successive biographies of the saint were directly or indirectly dependent on it. This first critical edition of the Vita provides a text based on the best manuscript witnesses together with the editio princeps of a versification of the Vita written by an anonymous poet few years later.
